Petra Community Housing, formerly Phoenixville Homes was created by the Phoenixville Area Council of Churches in 1994 to provide solutions to the lack of affordable housing. The earliest projects of the organization consisted of providing small grants and loans to low income, first time homebuyers enabling them to purchase a home. As the need for affordable housing grew, monies raised were invested into building ten (10) new homes in Phoenixville and purchasing, renovating and reselling existing homes. To date over 30 families in the greater Phoenixville area have been assisted in becoming first time home buyers.
Collaborating with multiple funders on a much larger scale, Petra Community Housing purchased three vacant former factory buildings and turned them into 139 affordable rental housing units for very low income elderly and adult disabled persons. Two facilities in Spring City provide housing for seniors 62 years and older and the facility in Royersford provides housing for the disabled, 18 years and older. Developing and managing these projects would not have been possible without a proactive board, dedicated staff and many community partnerships.
As the need for affordable housing continues, Petra Community Housing is on the front lines pursuing development opportunities in the area for low income individuals and families.
